THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN BOYS AND MEN
What does it mean to be a “Real Man?” We aren’t speaking of the biological meaning of manhood, but rather, the philosophical and socio-practico meaning of the concept. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, manhood is “The condition of being an adult male as distinguished from a child or female.” The latter half of the definition is easy to understand from a biological standpoint, but lets get into the definition of what it means to be a child. First, Merriam-Websters’ Dictionary states, a child is “a young person especially between infancy and puberty.” The dictionary then goes further to state, “one strongly influenced by another or by a place or state of affairs.” Here at TSB we’d like to further unpack this definition in stating that children are dependent beings who don’t wield dominion over their own thoughts, ideas, and actions. Another definition of manhood states that it is/are "qualities associated with men : MANLINESS.” Manliness is defined by traditional/historical showcasing of strength and intelligence. Throughout history we’ve seen that the greatest men are leaders who possess good spirits of morals, values, and principals. We’d like to expound in stating that, in contrast, the showcasing of strength and intelligence has been falsely claimed by rich and famous men who are mostly made popular through memetic stories of distorted realities. Real men are teachers, providers, caretakers, problem solvers, disciplined, decisive, and determined. Real men think with their big head, not the little one… hold that for a second… lol
We use this preluding statement to introduce one of our favorite Hip Hop Interviewers, Doggie Diamonds. Plainly stated, Doggie said, “When you reach manhood, you’re not allowed to do little boy shit. “ We want to explore the concept of “How to be a man” vis-a-vis Doggie Diamonds’ podcast. In black culture, we’ve equated loss of manhood with homosexuality. In this posts, we want to unpack that idea and let you know that manhood has nothing to do with your sexuality. You can be gay and be more of a man than the ratchet-toting agro-child from the hood. Our manhood has everything to do with how we present, protect, provide, and participate in our personal and familial lives. Manhood has everything to do with discipline and accountability. For example, Real men can admit to being wrong, are useful, objectively loving, and override their basic instincts without issue.
This podcast is straight gems n pure comedy. Another statement from Doggie is, “The algorithm is set up to make it seem like all we do is smoke, fuck, joke, play, and kill each other. These platforms that joke about black pain make us look stupid. Sometimes you gotta step back n say, that’s not funny.” We think this is the perfect amuse bouche to get you ready for this lesson with Mr. Diamonds— he drops gems.
